The Add Hope blueprint

How do you scale a R2 donation into a supercharged nationwide hunger-fighting network? That’s the challenge for The Biggest Hunger Hack – an Add Hope campaign – on 7 October 2025.
Add Hope does something deceptively simple:

It asks KFC customers to add R2 donations to their bill, boosts that amount with KFC and its franchisees' own contribution, and uses the money raised to serve 30 million nutritious meals to hungry children every year.

The impact so far

Since 2009, Add Hope has raised more than R1.2 billion and fed the potential of hundreds of thousands of children. But it hasn’t been as simple as it sounds.

As Add Hope has grown, we’ve built frameworks for governance, fundraising, partnerships, reporting and finance, communications and storytelling, internal buy-in and brand integration, and we’ve constructed a systems architecture. It’s a finely tuned recipe for youth potential built on a foundation of deep integrity. And each ingredient plays a role in making Add Hope impactful and sustainable.

Open-Sourcing our blueprint

Now it’s time to add even more hope by sharing our secrets. We’re open-sourcing our blueprint to drive growth. We’re challenging some of the nation’s brightest young minds to build on the Add Hope blueprint. They’ll make it more adaptable, more responsive, more scalable. We want to end up with a Gen Z blueprint others can apply for greater impact.
Our aim is nothing less than the end of child hunger in South Africa.

By turning the Add Hope playbook into a blueprint anyone can use, we’re showing that hope lights the way to a brighter future – and that it isn’t a secret but a solution.

Inside the
Add Hope Model

1

Governance

Add Hope’s governance framework balances accountability with growth, ensuring every R2 donation reaches hungry children through transparent, ethical operations. The KFC Social Responsibility Trust oversees customer donations and KFC contributions through rigorous partner vetting, KPMG audits and independent reviews.

Fundraising

Add Hope’s fundraising success stems from voluntary R2 micro-donations supplemented by KFC contributions. Since 2009, this no-pressure approach has raised more than R1.2 billion, with the unchanged R2 amount ensuring accessibility while achieving 47% growth in 2024. Staff have no targets, customers retain choice, and every donation directly funds a nutritious meal for a hungry child.

Partnerships

Add Hope’s impact multiplies through strategic partnerships with more than 120 organisations operating across more than 3,300 feeding centres in South Africa. Add Hope empowers NPOs and grassroots organisations to identify and reach the most vulnerable children. The model combines 16 national partners with 112 franchisee-selected local community-based organisations. Through rigorous standards, training and oversight, Add Hope ensures every partnership delivers nutritious meals safely, sustainably and accountably.

Reporting and finance

Add Hope publishes annual reports, and in 2024 it conducted its first impact assessment. Beneficiaries report quarterly on finances and programme impact, with oversight by the KFC Social Responsibility Trust and independent auditors. Donations are tracked through daily finance reports, with APIs linking operational systems to monitoring tools. Strong reconciliation and auditing processes ensure transparency, while disbursements follow strict invoicing and approval procedures.

Communications and storytelling

Add Hope's communications strategy centres on ‘KFC raised Add Hope, customers sustain it’, emphasising collective impact through multi-channel storytelling. Using impact stories, social media campaigns, celebrity partnerships and partner-driven content, Add Hope builds conviction and awareness while tracking sentiment and response metrics. Comprehensive crisis protocols ensure swift, transparent responses across all stakeholder groups, protecting programme integrity and maintaining trust.

Internal buy-in and brand integration

Add Hope succeeds because it’s woven into KFC’s organisational DNA. Every restaurant employee becomes part of the ‘Add Hope Love Army’, engaging customers while providing opportunities for community volunteering. The programme is mandatory across all franchises, integrated into onboarding and training, and supported by confidential reporting mechanisms. This comprehensive integration ensures authentic employee engagement and sustainable programme delivery.

Systems architecture

Add Hope operates on a cloud-native technology foundation built primarily on Microsoft Azure, with 95%+ infrastructure hosted in the cloud. The Social Collective platform manages partner communications and reporting, while Power BI and advanced analytics tools enable real-time monitoring and data-driven decision-making. However, growth is constrained by manual processes, data silos between financial and impact systems, and limited technical capacity among community partners.
